Alternative Spring Break (ASB)

Alternative Spring Break is a wonderful opportunity for you to spend spring break in another location to have fun, but also involve community service.

Service Projects This 2012 Semester
Ocala, FL – Habitat for Humanity
Eustis, FL – Habitat for Humanity
Wilmington, NC – NC Coastal Federation
Savannah, GA – Second Harvest Food Bank

This year we have over 40 students and staff volunteering for and attending these trips.

My name is Breon McMichael and I am one of the ASB Coordinators as well as a leader for one of the Habitat Trips. During this year, ASB has done a lot of fundraisers to help raise money for our trips. Some examples of fundraisers that we have done involve spaghetti night, babysitting, and Valentine’s Bake Sale. Overall, the fundraisers were a success and we were able to raise money to go towards the trips.

My name is Meghan Dorrell and I went on an Alternative Spring Break trip in 2011 to Charleston, SC. In Charleston we worked at a food bank doing all different types of service projects. Something we did was that we packaged pasta, checked spices and packaged food boxes for the elderly. My favorite activity was checking and cleaning donated beverages from local grocery stores. It was just a great memory with a lot of laughs. The trip is one of my favorite memories that I have of my freshmen year in college. It was on this trip that I met a lot of people that shared my same passion that I have of helping others. We got the privilege to help the people of Charleston, while at the same time we could experience the city.
